Speed Demon

Off the Cuff Comment:
Every time I am driving I always try to do the speed limit but here lately I notice that all the other drivers are going around me by at least 10 miles an hour. Isn't there something that can be done about this?

My Comment:
Sure there is, ignore the speed limit like the rest of us and drive 10 mph faster.

The Heat is Gone

Off the Cuff Comment:
I read with regret that the co-founders of the HOT Market announced that they no longer have time to do it and that it will be ending. Since I understand many younger families have enjoyed the HOT Market, I don’t understand why the young professionals have not stepped up to the plate and offered their time to continue a very valuable community access which is probably as much oriented toward young families with children as are the new soccer fields. Where are you, young professionals?

My Comment:
My guess is that those young professionals with children are too busy with their own families to organize such an event. Those without children are probably more than willing to organize a HOT Market, if it included massive amounts of alcoholic beverages and flip cup tournaments. I bet some grandparent type retirees would be great at organizing such an event, and as luck has it, Bartlesville is full of them!

Size Matters

Off the Cuff Comment:
What’s the point of Bartlesville growing larger? So the city council and the mayor will have more money to spend, throw on the ground, paint the streets, rearrange the parking, something like that. I moved here from Tulsa because I couldn’t stand the big city. I hope it never grows. I hope it stays the same size. In fact, I hope it grows smaller.

My Comment:
You can only grow bigger, not smaller. See definition from Merriam-Webster Online, 2 a : to increase in size

Depends on the definition of 'is'

Off the Cuff Comment:
I happen to be a big fan of Newt Gingrich. I noticed in the Sunday, March 22, issue of Off the Cuff somebody accused him of being a hypocrite and an adulterer. I wonder if the person who called in can prove Newt Gingrich is a hypocrite and an adulterer. I think Newt Gingrich is a great person.

My Comment:
He is a great person... except for admitting to adultery... while going after Clinton for the same thing... which makes him a hypocrite...

Permanent Vacation

Off the Cuff Comment:
You read all the time about people complaining that if you live in the United States you should be able to speak the English language. I agree with that, but turn the hand over. When you go to Mexico, did you learn their language? When you go to Brazil, did you learn their language? It works both ways, not just in America.

My Comment:
I really don't see a difference between "live" and "go to." Do you?

One Way

Off the Cuff Comment:
First, concerning traffic, let me briefly tell them how to fix the east-west traffic problem. Make Adams Boulevard one-way to the east with no stops from Highway 123 to (U.S.) 75. Make Hensley Boulevard one-way to the west from 75 to 123 with no stops. Leave Frank Phillips Boulevard a two-way street. This will alleviate 90 percent of the traffic problems going east and west.

My Comment:
Worst... Idea... Ever.

You're Fired!

Off the Cuff Comment:
The horrible Bush administration just fired eight U.S. attorneys. Oh, but wait, compare this when Bill Clinton first became president and all 93 U.S. attorneys were fired.

Off the Cuff Comment:
The Democrats are criticizing the Bush administration and Alberto Gonzales, the attorney general, for firing eight U.S. attorneys, making a big deal out of it. It’s the president’s prerogative to do that. I don’t know why he did it at this point, which is the biggest criticism I have.

My Comment:
I love how these two attitudes play off each other... Point the finger at Clinton, when all president's fire the attorneys (not to metion their own cabinet when they start a second term). Then asking why... At least the second comment is on the right track as to the real problem.

Non Sequitur

Off the Cuff Comment:
The gentleman last night in the editorial page had it exactly right. Not enough questions have been answered and there is just way too much money to spend on something like a water park without questions being answered. This stop light that they want to add on the south of (U.S. Highway) 75 is discretionary money. It is not needed. We need to spend the money filling pot holes and repairing streets.

My Comment:
Obviously this person doesn't realize it's not about what the city needs... It's about what the retirees want. And they want a light right by their retirement home.

Stop and Go

Off the Cuff Comment:
I’ve been driving through downtown during the lunch hour since they’ve put in the stop signs and I’ve given it a fair chance and it’s just not going to work. There’s too much foot traffic. You have to wait on a car, then it’s your turn and you have to wait on someone to cross. It’s just not a very good idea. Also, the light by Doenges Stadium, it stays on way too long. You can walk across the street four or five times before it finally turns green again.

My Comment:
Um, if you paid any attention to what the city said when doing this project, this is EXACTLY what they wanted. Sorry to say, but it appears to be working.

Progress

Off the Cuff Comment:
Back in the early days of our country, the Pony Express could get a letter from one coast to the other in about seven or eight days. Today, with the progress of jet aircraft, we can make it in about the same time. Sometimes a little earlier, sometimes more. That’s known as progress.

My Comment:
Your previous sentence defined it as progress, you don't need to cover that definition at the end of your comment.

Water

Off the Cuff Comment:
I will vote no on any tax increase for the City of Bartlesville unless the increase is for water. Human beings cannot survive without water. We can survive without recreation facilities and places to walk like PathFinder. Thank you.

My Comment:
But can human beings survive without a water park? If you ask me, it sounds like we are increasing taxes for water!

Police on a Leash

Off the Cuff Comment:
To all the dog walkers in Jo Allyn Lo Park, please, please, please keep your dogs on the leash. It’s the law. It makes my walking my dogs who are kept on leashes unenjoyable. I wish the police would patrol.

My Comment:
If only that was the biggest crime in town. The police are too busy giving speeding tickets to try and make up for "losing" drugs.

Overpriced Soda Torture

Off the Cuff Comment:
I was just wondering why families of prisoners in the county jail/city jail have to be punished. A lot of us are Christian people. A lot of us are good, honest, sincere people and they take advantage of us by charging $1.89 for a can of pop. That sounds ridiculous. They're not punishing the prisoner. They're punishing the family and I think something needs to be done about it. I don't know what, but if anyone will join me on this, I would appreciate it. God bless you.

My Comment:
I'll join you. I'll make sure my family stays out of jail. If by chance I have to visit someone in jail, I'll take a soda with me, or drink water.

Citizens Against Growth

Off the Cuff Comment:
I’ve just read Thursday’s paper about the concept for the recreation facilities. No matter how they talk it up, no matter what they say it will improve, it’s not needed in Bartlesville and the money should be put in other places. We wouldn’t be able to support tournaments in this town.

My Comment:
Your typical Bartlesville resident... Afraid of any ideas that involve growth and diversification of available resources. I think we should spend the money to put more road humps and stop signs in. Or maybe put a light near every retirement home so the people who shouldn't be driving anyway can get out easier.

Black and White

Off the Cuff Comment:
It’s two weeks since the ice storm began, an ice storm that hit Bartlesville and Oklahoma on Friday, Saturday and again Sunday. Two weeks later, people are whining about their street not being plowed by the city and their driveways being blocked. Yes, that was a nuisance, but folks thousands of people in our state don’t have power two weeks later. Why don’t you be thankful for what you have? And I thought it was kind of funny that black ice was at the bottom of your driveway. Wasn’t the ice white?

My Comment:
Why do you always have to turn everything into a race issue?

Garbage Disposal

Off the Cuff Comment:
I am tired of hearing people moan and groan about how the dogs are running loose and getting into the trash. These people are so lazy that they cannot set the trash out when and before they go to work.

My Comment:
If I put my trash out at 7:30 and the city picks it up around 2:30, is there a magical and mystical power surrounding the bags that will keep the dogs from tearing into it or will you just call me lazy for not staying home and guarding my trash from the unleashed and roaming dogs?

Spring Break

Off the Cuff Comment:
I have an idea. Most of the kids I’ve talked to would welcome the fact to be able to give up Spring Break in order not to have to go the extra time after school ends this year, because of the weather. I was just wondering if the school board might take that into consideration and cancel Spring Break

My Comment:
Were you talking to the kids in preschool?

Beaver Express

Off the Cuff Comment:
On Jan. 10, I lost my billfold. A gentleman found and returned it to my home. He would not accept a reward. Thanks to him from the bottom of my heart. He was affiliated with Beaver Express Service and I certainly appreciate it. Thank you.

My Comment:
Most men are affiliated with beaver express service.

Global Warming

Off the Cuff Comment:
Just think how much worse this ice storm would have been if we hadn’t have had global warming.

My Comment:
Yeah, it would have been snow. So much worse than freezing rain and ice. Global warming != decreased precipitation.

Overstatements

Off the Cuff Comment:
The eastern Oklahoman ice storm could be this year’s Katrina-like catastrophe. Scores, perhaps hundreds, of the less physically able, did not leave their homes before being trapped in them. Gov. Henry should take charge and order the National Guard into the area. At least a few thousand troops are needed to go on a house by house search to verify the survival of each occupant. They could use billing data of the utilities and postal information to help with identification and offer survivors transportation to nearest shelters or hospitals, if needed. These tragedies shouldn’t happen in America.

My Comment:
Just because this storm was closer does not mean it has anywhere near the impact Katrina did. This is selfish and insulting to anyone from the gulf coast. I don't think we need the National Guard, most of us went to work every day this month.

Black Ice

Off the Cuff Comment:
Mister, you’re right on about the snow plows. I cleared my driveway of the big snow, and the next day they piled black ice four feet wide and one foot deep across it. Hard on an old man.

My Comment:
Black ice, also known as "glare ice" or "clear ice", typically refers to a thin coating of glazed ice on a surface, often a roadway. I don't think ice a foot deep qualifies.

Half Ass

Off the Cuff Comment:
I want to thank the Washington County road crews for the great job they did clearing U.S. Highway 75. My drive to Tulsa would be a lot better if the Washington County line went all the way to Tulsa. Our neighbors to the south need to take note.

My Comment:
Too bad the county/city decided that neighborhoods didn't need to be cleared. Tough to get to Tulsa when you get stuck on your way to 75.
